Since 2015, Tónverkamiðstöð has been responsible for the innovation project Yrkja, which is a collaborative project between the center and various cultural institutions. The purpose of the project is to prepare new composers for work in a professional environment with bands, festivals and other art institutions.

In 2020, Ung-Yrkja was founded, for composers who are still studying. In other respects, the purpose of the project is the same as in Yrkja.

Since the first Yrkjun was launched, many have  of new composers  had the opportunity to work with well-known music groups, festivals and cultural institutions. The Iceland Symphony Orchestra has been the main collaborator of the project, but the composers have also worked in Yrkja with Mengi and with the music groups Nordic Affect and Jaðarberi.  

The composers compose  compositions that are premiered at a special Yrkja concert. Composers are encouraged to develop their working methods and work  under  under the guidance of so-called mentors who have been many of our best-known musicians, including Anna Þorvaldsdóttir, Daníel Bjarnason, Hugi Guðmundsson, Tinna Þorsteinsdóttir and Skúli Sverrisson.
