Discussions about the foundation of a MIC-centre (Music Information Centre) started amongst Icelandic composers around 1960 and was spearheaded by some of the country's grandest names to date – Jón Leifs, Sigursveinn D. Kristinsson, Atli Heimir Sveinsson, Jón Ásgeirsson, Karl O. Runólfsson, Jón Nordal, Jón Þórarinsson, Þorkell Sigurbjörnsson, Páll P. Pálsson, Jórunn Viðar, Magnús Blöndal Jóhannsson, Gunnar Reynir Sveinsson and Leifur Þórarinsson among them. 
 

After much discussion and negotiations to secure funding, Iceland Music Information Center (IMIC) was established on February 21, 1968 and has ever since been the country's main hub for information on contemporary Icelandic music.

In addition to the preparation of sheet music to Icelandic contemporary works, a large part of the operation

revolves around promotion of Icelandic composers and compositions, both abroad and in Iceland, with the aim of getting the works performed, thus supporting the work of Icelandic composers – a mission unchanged from the very beginning.
